Research abstract

To support future systems within the LCS that demand more power, Williams-Pyro, Inc. is proposing a Reconfigurable Advanced Modular Power System (RAMPS) that produces, conditions, and routes both module-generated and ship service power to multiple module loads in flexible locations and configurations. The proposed RAMPS will comply with the LCS Interface Control Document (ICD) to facilitate module loading, handling, and stowage in Support Type module zones while satisfying Navy operational, safety, firefighting, and damage control requirements. The RAMPS will be a portable device that will seamlessly integrate with the ship service power, while capable of identifying the peak demands of module loads and increasing the power and quality available to mission-critical systems. RAMPS will initiate load adjustment (adding and shedding as necessary) in response to specific contingency triggers and will drop only the minimum load necessary to maintain stability without disturbing generation. Since RAMPS will be completely automated, the Navy can avoid unacceptable delays required for manual reconfiguration of loads. The RAMPS consists of two submodules: Programmable Controller Module (based on WPI’s AccuTag™ platform) and Output Module.
