Research abstract

Phase I proved the feasibility and need for an update to the rotorcraft handling qualities Aeronautical Design Standard (ADS-33E-PRF), and for a related expert analysis package to assist in its practical application. Opportunities for new research have been identified for maritime operations, for very large cargo helicopters, and for unmanned aerial vehicles. Several flight and ground-based simulation experiments will be conducted through the course of this work. An initial version of the ADS-33 Software Analysis Package (ASAP) was developed in Phase I and applied to a single example set of requirements from ADS-33E-PRF. ASAP operates as a MATLAB toolbox and provides the user with expert knowledge about the applicability of the requirements and the quality of the data that is being applied. It is anticipated that the outcome of the Phase II work will be a revision to the specification ADS-33 and a beta version of ASAP that will incorporate the new requirements for maritime, cargo, and unmanned aerial vehicle operations. ASAP will be amenable to inputs from simulation and modeling software, such as CONDUIT or FLIGHTLAB.
