Research abstract

Triton Systems Inc, (Triton) proposes to demonstrate enhanced ballistic protection and weightsavings of spray formed aluminum armor for use in military vehicles. Spray formed aluminum armor has demonstrated a significant increase in performance over conventional aluminum alloys. With improvements to the spray forming process, such as compositional modifications and heat treatment, Triton is confident that the spray formed armor can be further enhanced to provide a 30% performance to weightsavings over titanium armor. This Phase II will address the process improvements and insertion requirements necessary to meet aggressive and urgent armor demands for our troops. Triton’s partner, the Applied Research Laboratory at Penn State University (PSU), has made significant advances in the tensile properties of spray formed aluminum. PSU’s Spray Metal Forming (SMF) facility has produced aluminum alloys with strengths in excess of 115 ksi at 8% elongation. These alloys can only be fabricated using a rapid solidification method.
