Research abstract

We propose to develop a forward-deployable, three-dimensional visualization capability suitable for incorporation into web-based, next-generation consequence assessment models, such as the Joint Effects Model (JEM) and the Integrated Weapons of Mass Destruction Toolset (IWMDT). The thin-interface, web-based, image-server visualization model will enable more informed decisions by the consequence assessment community and command structure through more accurate, understandable, and timely three-dimensional representations of hazard related data. This new visualization capability will be built from the open-source, freely available and widely used Visualization ToolKit (VTK), which we conclusively demonstrated during Phase I to be ideally suited for the real-time visualization of three-dimensional models created during use of the Hazard Prediction and Assessment Capability (HPAC). Phase II will develop a web-enabled image server component to query data and functionality from the consequence assessment model and use the VTK to construct three-dimensional images of hazard plumes, weather, complex terrain, urban cityscapes and Gaussian puff-related data. Using the VTK dataflow pipeline, these images may be served to a web-based viewer, or rendered directly on a local viewer with accompanying graphics acceleration. The image server design will be evaluated for incorporation into the JEM model near the conclusion of Phase II.
