Research abstract

In this proposal, Intelligent Automation Inc (IAI), University of Central Florida, and University of Delaware detail the development of an innovative spectroscopic technique for the detection and identification of improvised explosive devices (IED). Our approach marries two spectroscopic methods successfully used for the laboratory detection and identification of IEDs: terahertz time domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS), and laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). The key innovations include: a) the use of femtosecond LIBS to obtain spectrum with high signal to noise ratio and low background noise; and b) the use of fingerprint spectra of explosives in the THz region to identify materials. By combining these two technologies, improved probability of detection (Pd) and low false alarm rate (FAR) can be achieved, and a compact and portable IED detection system is possible.
