Research abstract

Trex Enterprises is pleased to submit this proposal to demonstrate the feasibility of a wideband, 1kW solid-state power amplifier for the E2C/D communication system, in the L-band frequency range. The E2C/D communication system currently utilizes a JTIDS vacuum tube based high power amplifier that occupies a significant volume, footprint, and weight in the aircraft. Current dimensions and weight of the tube high power amplifier are 7.68” h x 15.52” w x 21.00”l for a volume of 1.45 cu. ft. and 83.7 lbs, respectively. Trex proposes a solid-state amplifier architecture that is capable of producing 1kW of CW power, with a potential of significant reduction in footprint, volume and weight when compared to the existing vacuum tube amplifier. Besides the application in spread-spectrum communication systems, this power amplifier topology can be deployed in tactical counter-measure systems, in wideband radar systems and in medical imaging sensor systems.
