Research abstract

Combining AED Corp. and its multi-disciplinary team’s extensive and unique heavy fuel engine (HFE) hardware development experience with commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) diesel engine components, a concept diesel engine demonstrator (CDED) was designed during Phase I. Configured to facilitate dyno test exploration of power density, heat rejection, and fuel efficiency, the lubrication, cooling, and supercharger will be separately controlled. A structurally robust, DOHC 4-valve global COTS engine, with its abundance of super duty components, will be the diesel technology’s development base. The CDED will be built and dyno tested in the Phase I Option period to evaluate design concepts and advanced performance technologies. Knowledge gained will advance the design of the Phase II follow-on 300 and 600-hp Advanced Military Diesel Engine (AMDE) demonstrators. American truck and European auto diesels incorporate the advanced technologies and components required to provide the ADME technology base. The 300 hp AMDEs will use the same 4-cylinder COTS base as the CDED. The 600 hp AMDEs will use a COTS base engine similar in design architecture to the 4-cylinder. Results of this work and future engineering will be the development of dual use HPD, LSHR diesel technologies to a state readily adaptable to multi-cylinder engines of 50 to 600 hp; delivery of two developed AMDE demonstrators suitable for Phase III production prototyping as competitive alternatives to conventional diesels, specifically targeting selected FCS applications; and the companion hybrid electric drive propulsion concept engineering.
