Research abstract

Thermo-mechanical processing of ceramics and metallic alloys, some polymers and composites comprised of a mixture of these materials exist as bulk aggregates of single crystalline lattices. Understanding the physical mechanisms responsible for the dynamic response of those materials subjected to large strain at high stress rates is very important. From experimental observations statistical data describing the newly developed materials are available. The objective of this SBIR is to define a set of interoperable software components to support the effective reconstruction, meshing and analysis of the microstructures, and tie them together through a graphical user interface. In detail, this SBIR will provide tools that (i) produce 3D microstructures for polycrystalline materials from the given statistical description of these microstructures, (ii) quantitatively gauge the accuracy of the microstructures with regards to the given statistics, (iii) create an appropriate representation for automatic mesh generation from the microstructure, (iv) provide initial mesh generation as well as adaptive mesh procedures, (v) integrate with advanced analysis capabilities to enable the investigation of the properties and failure modes of these materials (vi) allow the user to control the entire process through a graphical user environment.
