Research abstract

Development of a computer-assisted, steerable, handheld laparoscopic tool is proposed to allow surgeons to navigate to locations in the abdomen and chest that can not be reached with current laparoscopic tools. The device has broad application in laparoscopic/endoscopic surgery. The immediate objective of the SBIR, however, will be development of a device for trauma care. The proposed device in its ultimate and ideal trauma version would be (1) usable by medics and paramedics; (2) able to combine triage, diagnosis, and administration of life-preserving therapy into a single device, (3) able to counter the primary causes of preventable death, i.e., loss of blood and control of the airway; and (4) portable/rapidly deployable in the field. It addresses the limitations of current endoscopic/laparoscopic tools by introducing an appropriate level of computer enhancement without a radical paradigm shift or culture change. Phase II will commence with determination of requirements and then development of a series of a prototypes. The investigators will undertake animal experiments with the prototypes, to demonstrate specific new capabilities suitable for trauma care and to guide ongoing prototype development. A surgical advisory group will meet with the team bimonthly, to assist with establishing requirements, provide design guidance and evaluate results.
