Research abstract

TRS Technologies has developed high energy density components for Ferroelectric Generators (FEG's) and Capacitive Discharge Units. Our technology is based on advanced materials and processing resulting in high quality ferroelectrics with high mechanical and electrical strength. For Phase II, we will use these advantages to develop pulse power components for counter IED devices, directed energy weapons, and multipoint detonation systems to be used on mobile platforms such as vehicles, aircraft, missiles, and projectiles. During Phase I, TRS demonstrated nonlinear, antiferroelectric capacitors capable of storing > 3J/cc of energy and providing > 2000 Amp peak current during 2 us discharge from 1000V. We also developed shock discharge materials with polarizations of ~ 40 uC/cm2 for charge output 50% greater than conventional piezoelectrics. For the Phase II program we will develop 1) high voltage FEG's elements to drive high impedance loads such as dielectric antennas, 2) high current multilayer FEG elements to drive low impedance loads such as EFI's and Magnetic Flux Compression Generators, and 3) high energy density capacitors for compact EFI firesets. These developments will provide the warfighter with valuable new tools to counter the threat of IED's, disrupt enemy communications, destroy electronically stored information, and disrupt vehicle operation.
