Research abstract

UWB systems are promoted as a method of optimizing the limited bandwidth available for information transfer. However, UWB systems must contend with path loss, multiple reflections, and higher powered radiators like WLAN or radars. Unless a breakthrough occurs, these ‘jammers,’ as well as DSP limitations, will limit sustainable data rates to <4Gbps. While jammers are typically intermittent and narrow-band, they are powerful enough to saturate a poorly designed front-end. SFC’s innovative, highly linear designs will enable systems engineers to maximize the full potential and flexibility of UWB systems. SFC has assembled a distinguished team to address this proposal. In conjunction with our university research partner, we are proposing a novel and innovative approach to meet the demanding requirements listed in the solicitation. Under this SBIR, innovative mixed-signal AFEs and ADCs for UWB systems will be designed and fabricated using a mix of ICs and discrete components. The advanced systems developed will be used to implement innovative UWB receivers with parallel AFE-ADC chains that can operate as a low-power, tightly coupled, single channel or multiple independent receivers. This advanced, flexible architecture for UWB receivers will be scalable in bandwidth, relatively immune to narrowband interference, and have good dynamic range.
