Research abstract

Skydweller, in partnership with Nokia and Tangram Flex proposes to leverage Skydweller’s Perpetual Flight platform with unprecedented payload capacity and persistence as a rapid deployment airborne private network. This solution will provide mobile airborne communication and networking infrastructure that is quickly reconfigurable with no user equipment vendor lock and open system architecture. For this demonstration, Skydweller will host Nokia’s proven mobile tactical 5G network to provide a ruggedized demonstration of the capability while paving a path for other communication solutions to leverage fully virtualized compute systems. A software-defined solution will allow flexible allocation of resources to other platform-based effects or sensors or offloading the computational requirements of lower Size, Weight, and Power (SWaP) platforms. The end goal is for Skydweller to operate as the ‘Queen Bee’, hosting the communication network and centralized compute for swarms of workers. This will be achieved with Skydweller’s lower operational and manufacturing costs compared to existing Department of Defense options. Skydweller will facilitate communication between high-value manned and unmanned platforms and low-value, attritable unmanned platforms.
