Research abstract
The Phase II effort will emphasize expanding monitoring for a more complete view of engine performance and health, and broadening from a point solution to a solution applicable to an entire shipyard. Expanding the monitoring is necessary to move from the situation of detecting emissions non-compliance toward predicting a future non-compliance and providing sufficient information to avoid it. This goes hand-in-hand with the opposite situation, that of detecting a problem with the engine which would lead to emissions noncompliance. To support deployment in a shipyard, additional infrastructure beyond the S2NAP® is needed before a monitoring system would be practical. A fielded system must support environmental engineers need to have data permanently recorded and reports generated to demonstrate emissions compliance, and also must notify maintainers when action is needed.
