Research abstract

A real-time, on-line monitor is needed both for environmental and potable water. In Michigan alone, billions of gallons of untreated or under-treated sewage is discharged into waterways yearly, potentially impacting drinking water and causing beach closings. Testing is now done by labs, a costly, labor-intensive procedure with results taking a day or more. The Army must purify water for warfighters in remote locations and insure its safe production, distribution and storage, but they currently have no rapid on-line water surety monitor. Translume's objective is to produce a micro flow cytometer, with fluid-handling and optical excitation and detection components all integrated in a small block of glass. Translume's unique and proprietary femtosecond laser manufacturing can produce this affordable, robust and permanently-aligned optical sensor that is attainable through no other means. These small sensors will detect and analyze bacteria without requiring sample preparation (the adding fluorescent labels or tags), thus operating unattended in potable water systems or environmental settings. They will provide real-time on-line and on-site data, to permit flagging of hazards and insuring action is taken quickly. Potential customers include municipalities, industries, and environmental quality departments.
