Research abstract

The objective of this proposal is to improve the computational tools identified in Phase 1 that will be useful in assessing rocket and missile propulsion systems for compliance with insensitive munitions (IM) requirements. Comprehensive testing to ascertain IM compliance for such systems is time-consuming and expensive. High-fidelity computational tools exist that can be used to address the assessment of existing and new rocket motors for violent response to unintended IM stimuli. These tools can serve as a design tool for meeting IM compliance, and may act as a "numerical" test capability for certification against IM requirements. The direct benefit to the government is a significant reduction in program cost and a compression of IM related testing to meet IM compliance. The techniques developed here are not semi-empirical and require no calibration testing. The result of the work proposed here would be a numerical tool with truly predictive capability for assessing IM regulation compliance of large rocket motors. As validation of the program's success, the model will be demonstrated against existing full scale IM response of a selected rocket motor such as the PAC-3 MSE.
