Research abstract

MEMS gyroscopes are impractical for long-term navigation in part because of their bias instability. MSSA has introduced a means to separate the signal from the noise that will enable stable operation of MEMS gyroscopes and enable inertial navigation over periods of time necessary for the execution of precision airdrop applications and thereby provide for operation without GPS. The gyroscope is also part of a MEMS IMU that integrates all the gyroscopes and accelerometers on a single chip. This form factor enables the smallest package and the lowest cost. The MSSA Integrated MEMS IMU can also be used to complement the GPS system and can be located in different parts of the glide system to better model the parafoil delivery system dynamics. The stabilization approach is a means to achieve better than 1 deg/hr performance in MEMS gyroscopes.
