Research abstract

We propose in this project to develop carbon nanotubes (CNTs) based field emission cathodes with high current density and long lifetime in pulsed and continuous beam operation for traveling wave tube applications. In phase I, we have successfully demonstrated high current density (>1 A/cm2) from our diode and triode CNT cathodes. In phase II, we will concentrate on improving our cathode design to enhance the cathode efficiency and lifetime in actual TWT environments. Meanwhile, we will continue working on our CNT materials to optimize their structures, such as diameter and lengths. Low work function materials are always attractive for making electron sources. In phase II, we propose to reduce the work function of CNTs by chemical doping. We will also try to produce other low work function nanomaterials. The field emission properties of these low work function nanomaterials will be investigated and the feasibility of using these materials for field emission cathodes will be assessed.
