Research abstract

(sphere) invented the world’s first and only single-lens 360° full-spherical (4pi Steradians) image capture solution for the AR/VR/MR market. Our patented technology captures the entire omnidirectional field of view on a single frame using a single camera, is adaptable to most any size sensor (including IR) and can be streamed in real-time. Absolutely no stitching, no stitching artifacts and no parallax. (sphere) technology can provide full situational awareness and be used to detect, identify and track multiple threats (including UAS, UAS swarms) from any direction simultaneously. (sphere) 360° omnidirectional image capture unlocks opportunities for more accurate, faster and efficient embedded ML-enabled Computer Vision and AI decision making at the Edge. The use of a single sensor greatly reduces overall system complexity, heat and energy requirements while allowing familiar user workflows for data transmission and post processing which can be more easily integrated into existing sensor networks. (sphere) image output is viewable in multiple formats instantly (including AR/VR/MR) and can improve Human-Machine Interfaces. The primary objective of this D2P2 is to develop a (sphere)-enabled multi-sensor integrated system-of-systems that can detect, ID and track objects flying below radar and over fence lines. (sphere)’s patented optics technology can see in every direction at once using a single camera and when combined in series with embedded computer vision and layered with additional sensor information (Acoustic, Radio Frequency, Radar etc.) can provide an impenetrable detection, ID and tracking zone around DoD installations, military bases and key infrastructure. (sphere)’s patented optics technology will be used to develop an Optical Fence Line security monitoring system that can Detect, ID and Track UAS up to 50 meters above the ground and be affordably scaled to a complete fence line reaching 50 meters in height. This system will provide alarms to objects crossing the fence line to ensure proper response from security personnel. The system will provide a crucial digital line of defense against existing and emerging tactics such as silent flight, mass attack, complex diversion, simple and smart swarming. In order to optimize the chance at success of developing an integrated and layered system architecture, (sphere) will be teaming with Black River Systems Company, an industry leader in counter unmanned aircraft systems (C-UAS). Black River Systems specializes in C-UAS hardware and software with a long history developing advanced ML-enabled Computer Vision models which employ machine learning algorithms to fuse multi-sensor data into actionable C-UAS information and can be easily integrated into existing C2 ML pipelines. Black River Systems Company developed Ninja, a radio frequency sensing system designed to detect, track, classify and defeat hostile small Unmanned Aircraft Systems which is widely deployed around the world.
