Research abstract

During the Phase II Sequential, at the government’s guidance, Hadron will focus on further development of the AR/VR tactical radio training platform. Hadron’s key objectives for this prototype include: completion of the VR implementation of the Atom Operator Course practical exercises, building VR implementations of additional practical exercises for tactical radio training and operational scenarios, integrating Integrated Battalion and Below (INB2) practical exercises into the web-based learning environment, and build VR implementations of INB2 practical exercises. The end result will be a prototype training system that can integrate various tools, processes, workflows, and use cases as they become available under the UNO PoR, and continue to support existing NetOps training use cases. Building on the successful development in the Phase II, a Phase II sequential would involve a number lines of effort in the AR/VR technology space, including: Users provided excellent feedback on how to make the hand gesture based controls more intuitive. For example, clearer distinguishing of gestures that move or rotate a piece of equipment vs gestures that interact with specific knobs or buttons on that equipmentMore development on gestures that involves working with multiple pieces of equipment, for example using a virtual cable to connect a radio to an antennaDeveloping improved algorithms for interpreting the raw sensor data of hand and finger positions, to make for smoother interactionsThe system developed for Phase II allowed for multiple users to collaborate in the same virtual space (even if they were in different physical locations), but there are additional capabilities to add to this system such as real-time voice communicationAccreditation of specific AR/VR systems for use in classified environmentsFurther integration with associated tactical radio technologies such as the Atom radio programming tool, as well as new radio programming tools being developed as part of UNONEW: Hadron also aims to enhance the realism of the simulated environment. This can be achieved in a few key ways, including adding more “operational” background features (e.g. austere environment simulation), and improving the fidelity of the tactile controls of simulated physical equipment.Further development of real-time multi-user trainer oversight and lesson management toolsUltimately, Hadron’s goal in a Phase II Sequential is to ensure the Phase II prototype is a unified, extensible training platform that can integrate with and enable immersive training delivery for any tool, technique, procedure, or software platform in both the existing Army NetOps ecosystem, and the upcoming UNO PoR. This includes supporting training workflows in 2D and 3D (incl. AR and VR), and collaboration with UNO PoR system integrators to ensure unity of effort.
