Research abstract

The repair of titanium alloy structural components has been limited to the use of fusion welding techniques for most airframe structural components. This repair approach compromises mechanical properties due to the resultant heat affected zone and coarse grain microstructures in the area of the repair. Additionally, current processes significantly curtail on-wing repair of structural components. This phase two program will continue the Phase 1 research aimed at demonstrating solid-state, on-wing repair methods for Ti 6-2-4-2S structural airframe components. This program will mature the technology to MTRL 4 levels of readiness and position the process for qualification and implementation on current Air Force systems.
