Research abstract

In this PhaseII SBIR effort, Corvid Technologies completes the development of an innovative approach for solving Unstructured Fixed Grid Navier-Stokes CFD flow simulations. The proposed approach developed at Corvid is referred to as the Virtual Geometry Insertion (VGI) technique. This approach allows for the virtual insertion of arbitrary geometric components into a standard CFD analysis. This geometry insertion is done without the traditional CFD solver requirement of a body fitted grid surrounding the geometry of interest, and hence, the virtual geometry is fully decoupled from the underlying computational domain. The primary benefit of this decoupling is that the geometry is free to move through the underlying domain during the solution analysis. Thus, resulting in transient solid body geometric motion without the typical instabilities associated with body movement in CFD analyses. Additional benefits of the approach include rapid parametric analysis, dynamic body motion, and increased numerical stability.
