Research abstract

The incorporation of nanoparticles into an increasing number of products and materials has raised issues concerning the fate of the nanoparticles once they are released into the environment. A comprehensive transport model that identifies the parameters that affect nanoparticle transport in soil, water and the atmosphere will be developed. The effect of nanoparticles on plants and aquatic species will be quantified as a function of nanoparticle characteristics such as size, shape, and chemical surface functionality. If significant toxicity is identified, acceptable release levels will be established and mitigation strategies proposed to ensure that any long term environmental effects of nanoparticles are minimized.
