Research abstract

Current aircraft engine test measurement techniques cannot measure Volatile Particles (VP) that are formed downstream of a jet engine. In this SBIR, we propose to develop a Controlled Environmental Reaction Chamber (CERC) that can become a standardized method for measuring VP. CERC will withdraw an engine exhaust sample, and rapidly expand (i.e. slow down) the sample while systematically injecting/mixing a controlled amount of cooling gas. In this way, the time-temperature history experienced by the engine exhaust (over hundreds of feet) is duplicated in a few feet or less in CERC. In Phase I, we will use our expertise in high fidelity CFD modeling to analyze an engine exhausting to the environment, and then design CERC to duplicate the time-temperature history of the exhaust gases. Innovative mixing techniques, developed through our vast experience in combustor design/analysis, will be utilized. The best concept(s) will be fabricated and tested. Measurements of temperature in CERC will be compared to CFD predictions to demonstrate feasibility of the proposed technique. In Phase II, CERC will be optimized to duplicate various environmental exhaust conditions (e.g. temperature and humidity levels) by astutely controlling the mixing gas. Final demonstration testing of the prototype CERC will be performed at UTSI.
