Research abstract

The rapid technology development for modeling and simulating human behavior and cognition has resulted in many incompatible Human Behavioral Representation (HBR) software systems. As HBR technology comes of age, there is growing interest in practical applications, such as the Air Force ¡V Integrated Capabilities Environment (AF-ICE) initiative for providing modeling & simulation interoperability, which requires reliance on HBR technology to adequately and cost-effectively incorporate the human element into simulation models. In other software domains, analogous problems have been solved through universal standards and/or introduction of ¡¥middleware¡¦. Within the HBR field, the standards approach has proven of little value except at the very coarsest of levels. CHI Systems, however, has capitalized on the opportunity to apply the ¡¥middleware¡¦ concept to meet HBR interconnection goals by developing (in Phase I) a new meta-architecture called Cognitive Architecture Bridge (CAB). CAB can be a ¡¥middleware¡¦ solution to bridging individual HBR architectures, allowing capabilities from heterogeneous cognitive architectures to be integrated into a single model application. CAB will allow a library of reusable components to be developed, leading to a more modular development approach. In this Phase II proposal, we seek to build on the successful Phase I results and develop/demonstrate a fully functional CAB capability.
