Research abstract

Multipath is a significant factor in determining the transmitter power and link margins associated with radio frequency communications systems. Modern datalink systems for terminal phase navigation require high data rates and low bit error rates, this is especially true for unmanned systems. Antenna constraints and power limitations further complicate the problem. This SBIR will investigate potential solutions that mitigate the effects of multipath with a multi-pronged approach. First, we will continue the development of two separate antennas that significantly enhance the overall link through the use of augmented antenna patterns. Second, we will analyze a waveform and link protocol that is designed to counter multi-path effects. Finally, we will develop a solution that utilizes multiple antennas to generate a simple phased array to augment blind spots associated with ground clutter and obstacles. These elements when combined will provide the coverage, data rate, and low bit error rates necessary to provide a reliable link.
