Research abstract

Trex Enterprises is pleased to submit this proposal to demonstrate the feasibility of a high-efficiency extremely high-frequency (EHF) power amplifier. On a battle field, reliable and timely transferring of information between and among reconnaissance assets is very critical to mission success. Due to the congested spectral space at the low frequency ranges, there is a definite advantage to operating at high frequencies such as the EHF range. Transmissions at the EHF range offer several advantages. One is the higher bandwidth associated with the high carrier frequency. Another is the avoidance of congestions being experienced at the low-frequency bands. Thirdly, communication links at EHF can easily be configured to be directive therefore are quite robust against counter-measure attempts. The power amplifier is the most cost-inhibit and function-restrictive component in the EHF communication link. Trex will propose a novel power amplifier topology that will overcome these function and cost issues, using a 3-D microfabrication technology.
