Research abstract

GHKN Engineering, LLC and Aerojet Sacramento have joined together to develop a solid rocket motor (SRM) integrated thrust control system (ITCS) adaptable for a family of missile systems. These companies bring extensive experience in the key areas required for design and development of thrust management systems. During Phase I (ITCS), the design and performance parameters established indicate the preliminary concept of integrated thrust vector control is a viable concept. CFD analysis has been performed on the candidate designs and further effort is focused on providing a preliminary geometry consistent with the specified goals of the program. To maximize the cost/benefits of the ITCS integrated design and to provide compatibility with current missile systems, the Phase II effort will draw upon work completed in both the Phase I and Phase II of the related, variable thrust SRM programs. The objective of achieving a thrust vector control system that will provide the required directional control, including a 180º turn, will be achieved using the integrated design which provides the simplest and least expensive approach. Current concepts include radial plug movement, gas injection, or a combination of both. A key feature of the proposed thrust vector control system is the ability to provide directional control immediately subsequent to SRM ignition. This feature is important to maximize stability from any launch platform.
