Research abstract

In Phase I Aerius Photonics has successfully completed the design of a Scalable Infrared Projector System (SIPS). In Phase II Aerius Photonics proposes to build and test a functional prototype high-temperature scene projector to demonstrate the fundamental operation of the SIPS. Aerius has partnered in Phase II with missile seeker hardware suppliers and experts in scene projection to facilitate transition of the SIPS into MDA programs. The SIPS design is capable of addressing the high temperature scene projector challenge for HWIL projection of boost phase, midcourse, and reentry vehicle targets and their related rocket plumes, staging events, hot nose-cones, flares, and debris. The design leverages cost-effective commercially available technologies for a direct solution to the needs of upcoming and ongoing MDA programs. The SIPS can project dynamic structured objects with an apparent temperature dynamic range of 3000K while maintaining high temperature resolution. The projector architecture is compatible with multi-spectral projection in the MWIR and LWIR bands with independent power control in each band for accurate temperature representation. The combination of large dynamic range, high apparent temperature, and fine temperature resolution in the SIPS approach addresses the need for improved scene simulation capabilities to accurately represent sophisticated target simulation algorithms.
