Research abstract

The team of San Diego Research Center (SDRC), EMS Technologies, and Boeing propose to develop and demonstrate an end-to-end satellite networking architecture that is fully interoperable with Global Information Grid (GIG) and GIG Bandwidth Extension (GIG-BE) from the perspective of IPv6, HAIPE, and QoS with corresponding hardware, software, and networking protocol stack specifications to provide high satellite link utilization, low access latency (from terminal to hub), high end-to-end performance and security, IPv6, and the capability to send emergency and high priority traffic at any given time. This design will leverage the Digital Video Broadcast – Return Channel via Satellite (DVB-RCS) and DVB-S2 standards to the extent possible in order to achieve low system cost. In order to justify the cost of switching from legacy proprietary satellite solutions to standard-based one such as DVB-RCS, cost alone is not sufficient. Because DoD is transitioning its future NCO based on the concept of GIG providing stable, high-bandwidth backbone and all the ground units need to comply eventually, having full GIG interoperability will make the decision to use DVB-RCS based solution less painful than upgrading their proprietary solutions. Our solution will be demonstrated based on extensive network simulation in which GIG backbone structure and protocols will be part of the scenarios and COTS DVB-RCS hardware using a satellite link simulator.
