Research abstract

The goal of the proposed work it to develop a fiber based amplifier capable of delivering 500 mW average power for free space, high speed optical communication. The amplifier must be capable of withstanding large radiation doses such as will be found in space. To avoid the radiation sensitivity caused by dopants used to adjust the silica index of refraction, the project will use holey (photonic crystal) fibers, which adjust the index of refraction with voids of various sizes rather than by adding impurities.
