Research abstract

Energid proposes to create a new type of Joint Terminal Attack Controller (JTAC) training system. The system will include a battlefield simulation, multiple intelligent agents, intelligent tutoring, voice recognition, dialog interpretation, discourse context tracking, synthetic vision, and a cognitive model of the pilot. It will be designed to run on a TAC trainee’s PC and integrate with the TAC’s equipment and maps. A pilot will be simulated, and no additional humans are required in the training loop. One key component of the implementation will be dialog management and interpretation. Our context system comprised of anaphoric references, exophoric references, and evoking references will be continuously updated as a result of both perceptual and linguistic events. Another focus will be a detailed model of the simulated pilot’s vision and cognition that executes quickly using new computational capability available in low-cost PC graphics cards. The results of a JTAC training mission will be saved and replayed for review. The complete system will leverage the latest algorithms, software, and training architectures to make a breakthrough system for helping the Services meet the growing demand for skilled, combat-ready Battlefield Airmen.
