Research abstract

The systems engineering is extended by embedding emerging practices and technologies of cognitive engineering in its practice. Systems engineering firm Deal Corp, and subcontractor Klein Associates, cognitive engineering specialists, apply Phase I research to the instantiation of the enhanced process by developing and demonstrating executable software tools that support and guide co-practice. The software tools are comprised of a loosely coupled, integrative, collaborative, distributed architecture that enables "best of breed" analysis and design methods and software aids to be effectively applied at the practitioner’s discretion. Loose coupling makes the architecture adaptable to acquisition process evolution. Management guides are included to inform planners of high-value activities and interactions that should be planned if human cognitive performance potentials are to optimally exploited. Critical cognitive engineering activities are associated with existing methodologies and software tools. Where an activity has not been previously addressed, new methods and software tools, that enable cognitive engineers to generate programmatic and technical products, are developed and integrated within the architecture along with existing methods and products from the cognitive, systems, and software engineering , and cost, risk and schedule disciplines. Walksthroughs of three programs of Air Force interests assure tool validation against a broad range of applications.
