Research abstract

Three-dimensional laser radar (LADAR) systems have proven to be effective tools for real time 3D image generation enabling autonomous target detection and recognition. They have demonstrated high probability of detection and identification of unobstructed targets; however, the challenges of extracting sufficient target information out of background clutter can limit the usefulness of these systems in operational scenarios. New LADAR seeker concepts are desired that incorporate additional discriminants to improve target ID in scenarios including partially obscured targets and distant targets. To enable these advanced LADAR concepts, new high performance laser sources are needed with output characteristics that enable advanced additional imaging modalities. To meet the needs of future LADAR systems, Aculight proposes a novel laser technology to generate high peak and average power multi-kHz repetition-rate pulses at eye-safe wavelengths with polarized output. The proposed optical source is all fiber based and packaged in a compact, rugged, and U-rack mountable fashion. It produces high pulse energy and excellent output beam quality. In the Phase I, Aculight delivered a low power laser to the Air Force for experimental testing in a LADAR system. In the Phase II, a 10x higher power laser will be developed, built, and delivered to the Air Force that enables distant target ID.
