Research abstract

This Phase II NAVAIR SBIR Program seeks to demonstrate the real CMC component fabricability and scale-ability for JSF flaps and seals using the MATECH GSM (MG)-developed and optimized low-cost SiNC polymers / PIP processes and using the MG optimized and also project-office recommended high performance 3D pre-form architectures. These architectures are two different 10-ply 3D; one is the orthogonal weave and the other a low-angle layer-to-layer weave. MG has successfully demonstrated densification processing of the thru-thickness angle interlock preform achieving high density and low open porosity. The cycle time from receipt of interface coated preform to final densified panel is <3 weeks. MG is confident to demonstrate high mechanical strength CMC suitable for jet engine components. MG will be utilizing two best preforms optimized by MG, which is believed to be best suited for the JSF gas turbine nozzle flap and seal application. This MG’s best architecture design will be used to further build the database and correlation to pc-GINA modeling. We will use this information to go forward for full material characterization, and will recommend to the project office for fabrication of flap and seal component engine test articles.
