Research abstract

This project is a new twist on an old problem; intercepting and incoming attacker. In this case, the attacker is an anti-aircraft missile. Everything in the existing body of knowledge in tactical missile guidance is applicable here, but our implementation is unique. It turns out that almost the entire rear hemisphere of an airplane can be guarded using a guided munition without propulsion. The Micro Destructive Interceptor (MDI) glides back like a trailing guard, and positions itself between the host aircraft and the attacker using conventional homing guidance and an imaging seeker. But the line of sight between the attacker and the interceptor will vary from dead astern to about a broadside. The seeker look angle must be able to cover this range, either with a low cost gimbal or with multiple strapdown FPAs. The warhead and fuse would probably be leveraged from Stinger or other existing 2.75” munition.BENEFITS: Technologies developed may have application in commercial aircraft protection from the Man-Portable Air Defense System (MANPADS).
