Research abstract

This Small Business Innovation Research Phase II proposal deals with the development and production of surface functionalized woven and nonwoven fabrics using a unique polymer nanocoating process (DryFab). The DryFab process is an inherently low cost process that does not require the use of solvents or water to functionalize fabric materials and furthermore it can be coupled with the deposition of metal and ceramic nanolayer coatings to expand the functional properties of a treated fabric. The Phase I program demonstrated that the DryFab Process has the ability to manipulate fiber and fabric surface properties to create unique performance enhanced functional finishes not possible by using industry standard application techniques. The Phase II program will focus on the development and production of three different materials that will be used to produce uniforms that will be delivered to Marine Corps for field trials. a- Light Weight Desert Camouflage Material and Uniform b- Light Weight - Pocket Size Emergency Uniform for Thermal Management and IR Signature Reduction c- High Temperature Uniform to Protect Against Explosion Based Flash Fires BENEFITS: In addition to producing product for DOD related applications, the technology developed in this program relates to a series of commercial products that includes common apparel such as shirts and pants, performance apparel, medical uniforms, personal care fabrics such as diapers and wipes, construction membranes used to reflect heat while minimizing mold and mildew formation, emergency relief blankets, fire suits, high fashion garments, window blinds, others. It is Sigma’s intent to expand and grow its business by capitalizing on its unique capabilities, and ongoing development successes, in the area of functional fabrics.
