Research abstract

The purpose of the Phase I SBIR program was to demonstrate the feasibility of a ballistic covering for the existing HGU-56/P flight helmets. The scope of this effort covered the identification of applicable materials; fabrication and testing of ballistic test panels and development and fabrication of a helmet armor concept. In Phase II a basic design will be developed and readied for production should the need for expedited fielding arise. Additional investigation and research will continue to improve the design, reduce its weight and improve its functionality. The Phase II effort will produce an optimized armor covering that will provide the most ballistic protection possible to the head, limited by size and weight tolerance of the pilots.
