Research abstract

SHOT proposes to capitalize on our successful phase I effort of using electrophoresis as a novel coating mechanism for sealing concrete. Previous and ongoing research suggest that nanometer scale particles can be migrated into hardened cement paste resulting in dramatically lower hydraulic permeability. Our previous experience in developing electrophoretic hardware provides an ideal foundation for the development of new hardware for additional applications of this unique process. The SHOT team will design and develop an ideal sealant/coating solution as well as the hydraulic equipment as key components of the SHOT® Electrophoretic Sealing System (E-Seal). This system will be used to verified and validate samples of cement paste. Additionally, concrete samples will also be treated and evaluated for the effectiveness of the treatment in reducing the hydraulic permeability of concrete. The results of this testing and analysis will guide SHOT in designing equipment and optimizing the treatment coating solutions which in turn, will produce a viable and effective concrete coating system.
