Research abstract

The development effort for the Phase II program will entail designing and building a cleaning apparatus for cleaning fiber optic connectors based on the feasibility prototype evaluated in PH I. The device will be a self contained, portable unit that will effectively clean a wide variety of solvent and particulate-based contaminants on the end face of fiber optic connectors. The unit will be designed to operate in small confined areas and to withstand the rigors of the harsh military environmental conditions. A high degree of automation will be employed within the device/ process so that the cleaning operation is simple and fast for the service technician. The PH II effort will culminate with the field trials of a number of cleaning units and yield a design that is suitable for production.
