Research abstract

Phase I investigated two electrochemical couples, Li/CuV2O5 AND Li/CFx, as candidates for active munition battery applications. The Li/CuV2O5 performance was found to be superior across the temperature of –46oC to +65oC. Two novel battery designs were also introduced and these designs were aimed at ease of cell miniturzation. A baseline solution having the formulation of LiBF4 /g-BL:DME(1:1) and found to have ultra-low temperature capability was also established. For Phase II, the following tasks are proposed: Task 1. Long Life Cell Performance Projection based on Arrhenius plots; Task 2. Battery Concepts and Cell Electrodes. This task considers two very innovative battery designs directed at cell miniaturization and cell manufacturability; Task 3. Battery Mock-Up Build. This task establishes the essential processes and documentations for the making of electrodes and the overall cell assembly techniques; Task 4. Build and Test Prototype Batteries. Functional battery units representing the selected battery concept will be built and tested as a function of temperature and mechanical effect; and Task 5 will be directed at the build of six(6) hermetically sealed prototype hardware.
