Research abstract
The quench-protection strategy at 77 K identified in the Phase I STTR program involves depositing a thin film of a ceramic insulation having a large thermal conductivity at 77 K. Two ceramics were identified for this strategy, ZnO and Zn2GeO4, and in the Phase II STTR program the deposition properties of these ceramics will be explored (sputtering, ion-beam-assisted sputtering, pulsed laser deposition). The most favorable ceramic + method will be used to coat a 12-m length of HTS tape which will be used to wind a 50-turn magnet for quench-testing. The quench modeling code begun in Phase I will be completed and used to design the magnet and analyze the test data. The research institute in Phase II will be the National Renewable Energy Laboratory. The subcontracted institutions will be the University of Pittsburgh, the Ohio State University. A consultant will be retained to consult on all aspects of the Phase II research.
