Research abstract

The use of Multistatic/Multi-platform ASW capabilities are needed to counter the improvement in capability of enemy submarines deployed by potential adversaries. The need exists for systems that provide a wide area search capability while at the same time providing sufficient standoff distances for friendly forces. The use of Multistatic receivers for active sonar sources can significantly increase the effectiveness of the current shipboard and helicopter ASW systems by increasing the likelihood of aspect dependent target echo returns. This SBIR will develop a new Mid-frequency Passive Sonobuoy designed to operate as an adjunct receiver for the high-power SQS-53C bow mounted sonar and the variable depth ALFS dipping sonar. Extensive system performance modeling was utilized in Phase 1 of this SBIR to identify the best candidate adjunct receiver configuration. In addition, the technical feasibility of developing and packaging a mid-frequency sonobuoy that is operationally compatible with the surface combatant sonar and the ALFS in an A-sized sonobuoy form factor was also an important factor. In Phase 2 we will prototype the leading candidate configurations and evaluate the performance under real world environmental conditions. In Phase 3 we will transition the sensor to an A-size air deployable fleet asset.
