Research abstract

During Phase I, TSC designed an X-band MTI omni-directional radar (MTIOR) for OAV an UGS applications. We demonstrated that the radar could detect moving dismounted personnel to a range of 3 km in a 3-m resolution cell, with a probability of detection )PD) > 80%, and ground vehicles with PD > 95%, with an angular measurement accuracy of 1.2 deg rms (dismounts) and 0.5 deg rms (vehicles), under all-weather/day-night conditions. The system was designed to be implemented with ultra-lightweight state-of-the-art solid-state components, contained within 38 cu. in., and weighing 3.2 lb (achievable within Phase II), and consuming less than 30 W. With more component integration, the radar weight will be reduced to 2 lb. In addition, MTIOR is an LPI/LPD radar: it transmits 1 W or less. TSC developed a Phase II plan, which consists of developing, fabricating, and integrating a MTIOR prototype within the projected volume and weight, and testing its detection and angle resolving performance in ground and tower tests with personnel and vehicle targets. We surveyed the microwave and digital industries in Phase I, and are confident in meeting our goal. TSC will be assisted in this effort by MARK Resources, which has expertise in such radars.
