Research abstract

Troops entering unknown passages such as tunnels, caves or sewer pipes would benefit from knowing something about its geometry. This project aims at providing a system that reveals the geometry of such passages before the troops have to enter the passage. Sound is projected into the passage and the reflected waves are recorded and processed. The result is a map or diagram of the geometry - the cross sectional area vs. distance alomg the passage. Phase II research extends the capablity of the software developed during Phase I, and tests the system under field conditions.
