Research abstract
The NDE/Materials Characterization Checkout Center (NCC) will provide the Army a state-of-the-art ultrasonic measurement system for NDE and materials characterization. Data from this system will give the user assurance that the MPH manufactured parts are within required parameters as to flaws (porosity, inclusions, etc.) and importantly, mechanical properties such as moduli. In addition, this is the first system to also determine higher-order elasticity to assess engineering properties such as heat-treatment. The system will included a 4-axis scanner able to handle parts up to 10” high by 6” in diameter. The system will utilize Luna’s newest digital phase locked loop that has demonstrated resolution better than parts per million. The system delivered to the Army will be the latest prototype built for the MPH and will include Luna’s software designed to operate the scanner, the ultrasonic high-resolution system and the load-inducing derivative system enabling the Army to scan a part, archive the scan data, develop a diagnostic image of the part and assess the bulk modulus, Young’s modulus, Lame’ constants and Poisson's ratio, for example. With the derivative system the user can compare the as-manufactured part to data for calibration parts to compare heat treatment and other higher-order properties.
