Research abstract

The objective of this SBIR is to develop a software tool for the simulation of radiation and scattering problems in the presence of large complex structures or scenarios, which can accurately and rapidly account for all scattering phenomena and ideally can perform system-level simulations. The proposed simulation engine will hybridize a versatile full-wave technique like the Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) method with fast high frequency asymptotic techniques such as the Shooting and Bouncing Rays (SBR) method. The resulting approach will provide the accuracy of full-wave techniques where higher resolutions are needed and small structural details have to be taken into account. It also benefits from the computational efficiency of asymptotic techniques in the large-scale areas. The interface between the two techniques is defined based on the concept of Huygens surfaces. The proposed CAD tool will be demonstrated for vehicle-mounted antenna systems in complex propagation scenes as well as co-site interference in military vehicular communication systems.
