Research abstract

The U.S. Navy has stated a need for reduced manning onboard future Naval vessels. This shall be accomplished by automating a multitude of processes and obtaining feedback via wireless sensors. Most modern sensors do not contain enough stored power to allow four years of continuous operation. The goal of this effort is to leverage Luna Innovation's existing wireless monitoring system to include state of the art power storage cababilities. In Phase I of this effort we shall the research team shall evaluate alternative methods of power and include the best technology into a bechtop sensor prototype. The Phase II shall allow the research and development team to create functional field-ready prototypes. This effort builds on the expertise of Luna Innovations in designing self-powered wireless sensor networks and secure wireless communication devices.
