Research abstract

The proposed Phase I SBIR program addresses the need for a model which will allow better understanding of the breakdown of corrosion protection systems on US Navy components and structures. This Phase I project will demonstrate the use of data mining to extract knowledge from existing US Navy data to predict the breakdown of coatings and the onset of corrosion damage in specific systems. This technology will enable the Navy to reduce the total cost of ownership and to increase readiness. In the Phase I program, Faraday and the project team will demonstrate the power of data mining to model coating breakdown and corrosion in tank systems, by collaborating with the Naval Research Laboratory at Key West, FL, and validate the models with limited experimental data. We will also investigate the utility of this approach for other corrosion problems. In Phase II, we would extend this approach to a wide range of protection systems and structures of interest to the Navy, and develop broad models based on a combination of theory and data mining.
