Research abstract

An electromagnetically driven plate can be used as a source to elicit a target response comparable to that due to an UNDEX event without use of explosives. Feasibility of utilizing such a concept was demonstrated during Phase I. A “DockShock” concept would employ an array of such electrically driven sources to produce directed pressure pulses sufficient for full ship shock testing. This proposed Phase II will involve detailed development and evaluation efforts leading to design of a full scale system and evaluation of an FSP demonstration test in the Phase II Option. The proposed work includes parametric and optimization studies, development of scaling laws, reduced scale testing, and assessment of target responses. The objective is to elicit on a target the entire response due to an underwater explosion by creation of the required pressures and liquid velocity histories during all phases of an underwater explosion including the initial shock pulse, the subsequent bubble driven flow and the bubble collapse pulse. Innovative techniques for focusing, shielding, and creation of bubble screens to mitigate environmental damage will be investigated. DYNAFLOW, teamed with BAE Systems and Anteon Corporation will leverage extensive parallel research efforts to develop a completely non-explosive ship shock testing technology
