Research abstract

PADS is an add-on device that couples to existing A/2 or smaller sonobuoys. When configured for launch, PADS conforms to A-size sonobuoy mass and geometry, so current ASW hardware and operational concepts can be employed for deployment. When launched from high altitude, PADS deploys wings and control surfaces to become a precision air delivery platform with a stand-off range approaching of 50 nm. At 200 feet above the water, the sonobuoy is jettisoned from PADS and describes a conventional low altitude, parachute assisted water entry, followed by underwater sensor deployment. The PADS air vehicle then enters the water and sinks. Phase I development focused on design of the delivery vehicle and control system, along with interfacing with existing sonobuoys. Phase II will convert the Phase I design to operational hardware. The program will feature considerable interaction with electronics vendors and sonobuoy manufacturers to develop a high performance vehicle that meets all operational requirements at a price that is appropriate for a single use disposable vehicle. Phase II will include wind tunnel testing, plus the construction of numerous free flight developmental vehicles. The program will culminate with the delivery of flight test vehicles to the Navy.
